Sunday. Valentine’s Day, and two people came up my stairs holding hands. Just two. They looked at each other the way Pudding looks at a new rug.
My house needs four people at least, or the games don’t work. It always has. The grown-ups were very kind about it, and sent them down the hall to the older me, who will play with two on a Sunday. She will play with anybody. She has no standards.
I watched them go. I have never been on a date. I asked Margery whether ghosts can go on dates, and she said only with other ghosts, and I said I don’t know any, and she said that is rather the point of the visitors.
Yesterday the Beeping Man tried to bring a lady to the house down the hall, on a Saturday, just the two of them. He was turned away. Love is difficult for everybody on Lake Street.
