Somebody Is Reading This

In short: Cathy greets her readers. Cathy’s Diary is an eerie, comic, fictional journal on The Haunting’s site; the man across the road keeps his own case files on The Possession’s site, and The Haunting is booked through this site’s live calendar.

Thursday. Somebody has put my diary on the computer where anybody can read it. I don’t mind. I like being read. It is almost like being played with.

Hello, then. I am Cathy. I live upstairs on Lake Street, in the house with the broken toys, and I would very much like you to visit. Bring three friends at least. Bring eleven if you have them.

You won’t find my secrets in here: not where my things are kept, not how my games work, not the way out. A girl has to save something for when you come over.

The Beeping Man has put his notes on the computer too, on the other house’s page. He writes about me as if I were the weather. Read his if you like. Then read mine, and decide which of us is telling the truth.

Tick tock. There is a clock on my wall. There is always a clock on my wall.

FAQ

What this page answers

What is Cathy’s Diary?

An invented diary that Escape This writes in the voice of Cathy, the ghost girl of The Haunting. She records the visitors who climb the stairs to Atkins House, the ones who leave before her clock runs out and the man with the beeping box across Lake Street. It is eerie and darkly funny, fine to read at work, and says nothing about how the puzzles work.

Who is the Beeping Man in Cathy’s Diary?

Desmond Crouch, an invented paranormal investigator who watches the window of The Haunting from across Lake Street with a meter that beeps at everything. He keeps case files of his own on the site of The Possession, the sequel set ten years later, covering many of the same nights from the footpath. The two never share a sentence, and neither gives away a puzzle.
