The Long Way Round

In short: Cathy enjoys the crawl. The Haunting has a crawl space and other tight spots, so it may not suit pregnancy, limited mobility or severe claustrophobia; mild nerves are often fine with friends, and the panic button is always there.

Friday. There are low parts of my house that are just my size. Tonight a very tall man found one of them on his hands and knees, saying a word I won’t write down. I have never laughed so much.

The grown-ups tell people about the low bits before they book. If someone is expecting a baby, or can’t get down onto the floor, or goes funny in tight places, they should ask first. One lady tonight did ask, and decided to come anyway, and went through with her eyes shut, holding her friend’s ankle. Brave.

That is the trick, I think. Nobody in my house goes the long way round on their own. There is always an ankle to hold.

The Beeping Man came to the door to ask how big the low parts are, for his sister. The grown-ups told him. He looked pale. She looked thrilled.

FAQ

What this page answers

I’m claustrophobic. Should I avoid The Haunting?

If it’s severe, probably. The Haunting includes a crawl space and confined corners in the dark. Milder nerves are often fine with friends around, and the panic button is always there. Ask the team if you’re unsure.

Will we have to crawl through Atkins House?

Yes. The Haunting has a crawl space and other tight spots, so it may not suit anyone who is pregnant or has mobility difficulties. Have a word with the team before you book if that applies to someone in your group.
